Cardiac Anesthesia Locum Tenens Protocol

Planning on using a locum tenens anesthesiologist for your cardiac program? For new programs, this can be difficult process. NCAC has developed a customized approach to selecting, credentialing and orienting prospective locum tenens cardiac anesthesiology clients.

An unfamiliar cardiac anesthesia practice situation may present a formidable challenge to any locum tenens cardiac anesthesiologist, since no one practice is the same. Factors such as pre-anesthesia preparation, intraoperative routines such as placement of monitoring lines, choice of pharmacological agents post-cardiopulmonary bypass and postoperative follow-up all have to be duplicated by a practitioner who is new to your institution.

Our customized package uses practice questionnaires, hospital familiarization procedures, a detailed practice description, an OR orientation log and post-assignment evaluation forms. Any approach to matching a cardiac program and a potential locum tenens anesthesiologists must have a full understanding of the scope of the cardiac program and what the program is looking for in that anesthesiologist; for e.g. TEE skills, solo work, CRNA supervision, on-call requirements, etc.

Our protocol lays out the necessary steps that hospitals, anesthesia groups, medical directors and credentialing departments should follow to ensure that eligible locum tenens cardiac anesthesiologists are compatible with your practice and fully prepared to meet the needs of your program.

Perioperative TEE Report Template

Are you digitalizing your TEE images? Are you converting from paper to online digital formats within a digital TEE archive? VCR tapes and MODs are fast becoming old-technology. Once the digital TEE study is downloaded into your hospital archive, how are you preparing your TEE reports?

Conversion to an online digital archive can be time-consuming and frustrating. Once your digital TEE archive has been created, a report must be generated – this may be complex and require support from network specialists and software mechanics.

NCAC has developed a user-friendly, customized TEE template for digital archives using syngo® Dynamics (formerly KinetDx™ Solutions).

NCAC’s TEE Report Template takes all the requisite information that is needed to build a concise, thorough TEE report, including chamber assessments, ventricular systolic and diastolic function, even a wall-motion scoring chart. One scrolls through several pages. checking off key findings. Flexibility is built into the system, should the operator desire to insert a specific narrative.

A unique feature of the report is the “summary” that can be used by hospital coders to ensure compliance with billing practices, diagnostic-related groups and State Department of Health initiatives. Once your TEE report is archived, key hospital departments, such as medical records, quality improvement and billing can access this information.
